Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
